The Gate of the Book: Religious Books from the Collection of the Jewish Historical Institute Library (21.09.2005-11.05.2006)
This was the first exhibition of religious books in the history of the Jewish Historical Institute. It refers to the exposition of different language editions of the Bible organised in May 1939 in the Main Judaic Library – today’s building of the Jewish Historical Institute. The collections of the Main Judaic Library were seized by the Germans in December 1939 and never seen again. The library collection of the Jewish Historical Institute has been gathered from 1945. Today it is the largest and most varied collection of Jewish religious book in Poland. The aim of the exhibition is to show the wealth of tradition included in religious works – from the Torah, through to the Talmud, as well as commentaries, prayer books, and rabbinic responses to Hasidic and Kabbalistic literature.
