The book presents almost 100 postcards of Białystok from before 1915. It was a time of rapid development of this town, called „the Manchester of the North”, a large textile industry center. This was an unusual town, with characteristic features of a borderland, subject to influence of the West and the East, a meeting point of many cultures, nations and religions. Most inhabitants of Białystok were Jewish, but since the turn of the century the Polish identity started to revive and local Germans prospered, Slavic minorities from the East grew in numbers. This mixture of cultural patterns resulted in unmistakable original values and unique climate.
