Research at ZIH dates back to 1944, when the Central Jewish Historical Commission, out of which ZIH originated, launched the crucial project which involved systematic recording of survivors' testimonies. Before 1986 ZIH was the only center in Poland to pursue research on the history of Polish Jews.

At present ZIH employs specialists in all periods of Jewish history in Poland, its various aspects, including Polish-Jewish relations. The major scholarly challenge is to record, study, and edit unique collections documenting the life and destruction of Polish Jewry under German occupation, as well as Jewish life after the war.

Research staff meetings every Tuesday are open to scholars and teachers from other centers, and focused on presentations of interesting research projects, studies and publications.

Education is a prerequiste in the process of developing open-minded attitudes in a society. ZIH initiated educational activities as soon as possible in the wake of the political transformation of 1989. We began with weekly trainings for high-school teachers. Our current educational offer is much more varied. Teachers are always welcome to order or use a script for classes on Jewish topics. Open public lectures are held to popularize Jewish-related knowledge or discuss current issues.
