Jewish artists in Poland produced exquisite ritual objects and secular art including paintings, sculptures, and graphic. The museum collection also includes everyday objects that help us remember not only those who perished in the Holocaust, but also the vibrant Jewish culture that developed in Poland for centuries. The ritual art holdings include a unique collection of textiles and some objects brought to Poland by Greek Jews who were murdered at Auschwitz. Hidden by Germans in the cellars of some historical palaces in Lower Silesia, these pieces were discovered after the war and gathered at ŻIH.
ŻIH aqquired most of its paintings and sculptures through the efforts of the activists of the Jewish Society for Arts. After the war they traveled the country searching for surviving works of Jewish artists.
The most spectacular works of art are presented in a permanent exhibit at ŻIH.
A project has been launched to publish the catalog of ŻIH's art collection.
