The Jewish Historical Institute -The Research Institute was formally established in 1994, but it owes its name, history, and collections to the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute. By virtue of the Warsaw municipality decision, the latter has been a formal owner of the building and collections since 1947. But the first to launch the gigantic project of preserving the memory of Polish Jews and gathering what was left of their heritage after the Holocaust, was the Central Jewish Historical Commission, established in December of 1944. The need to create a research institute - ŻIH - IN-B - was realized in 1994. ŻIH is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, but the funding comes mainly from the Ministry of Science.
ŻIH is headed by:
Dr. Eleonora Bergman, Director
Dr. Andrzej Zbikowski, Deputy Director (research, education and publishing)
Dr. Józef Chajn, Deputy Director (ŻIH's collections)
A tall office building has been erected on the site of the Great Synagogue on Tłomackie Street. But in its shadow you can still see and visit a historical place, the significance of which is by no means merely historical. As a living demonstration of Poilsh Jewry's history, ŻIH serves as a major research and educational center.
